Here's How the VeriChip WorksThe VeriChip is 11.1 mm long (about the size of a grain of rice) and holds 128 characters of information. It also has a biocompatible coating making it fully compatible with the human body, and it is administered with a syringe into the upper arm (Amber, 265-272). It's a simple outpatient procedure which is very similar to getting a shot. The VeriChip uses RFID technologies (Radio Frequency Identification) it has a 16 digit personal identification number embedded in it (no other information is on the VeriChip). When the chip is scanned with a VeriChip scanner, it emits a radio frequency signal that sends out the ID number. This ID number is linked to an online database that contains customer's personal information. The customer's plan may include contact information for a patient's healthcare provider, and links to a medical facility's electronic records system. It may also include a living will, power of attorney, do not resuscitate request, and organ/tissue donor card ( Foster 44). Once scanned all stored information becomes instantly available.
